Europe's largest lumber manufacturer opts for Komatsu industrial wheel loaders
Published on 12/4/2023

The internationally active and renowned Stora Enso Group - one of the leading providers of sustainable wood-based solutions for the construction industry and one of the largest private forest owners in the world - acquired the WA475-10KTL from Komatsu, a wheel loader ideally suited to the requirements of its Czech subsidiary in Plana.

The facts about the Finnish-Swedish group Stora Enso are impressive: in 2022, the company generated revenue of 11.7 billion euros with around 21,000 employees. The Wood Products division is Europe's largest manufacturer of sawn timber and, with its growing Building Solutions business area, is responsible for low-carbon construction worldwide.

In addition to solutions for packaging and biomaterials, the company is recognised as a supplier for timber construction across continents and industries. The company has numerous sites in Europe and its projects span the entire globe. The international group operates three sawmills in Austria. These are in Brand (Lower Austria), Ybbs (Lower Austria) and Bad St. Leonhard (Carinthia). In the Czech Republic, the company operates production sites in Plana and Zdirec, the first of which recently acquired a brand new Komatsu industrial wheel loader. Stora Enso purchased the WA475-10KTL - a modern and powerful machine - from Kuhn Bohemia a.s., a subsidiary of Kuhn Holding GmbH, Eugendorf near Salzburg.

The newly developed industrial lifting frame is particularly suitable for the use of large-volume buckets and timber grabs.

Modern wheel loader with new KTL (Komatsu Tool Linkage) industrial mast

The Komatsu machine is used at the Plana plant for loading sawdust and woodchippings. As the wheel loader is equipped with a 14 cubic metre high-tipping bucket, the machine can handle a correspondingly high volume of material. The machine is equipped ex works with a new industrial mast, which is particularly suitable for use with large-volume buckets or log grapples due to its design and high tipping torques.

Before the purchase, the Stora Enso team in Plana analysed the machine for performance, productivity and diesel consumption. They were very satisfied with all the parameters, which is why they ultimately decided to purchase the WA475-10KTL.

In times of high fuel costs, the wheel loader impresses with a modern, power-split drive train that ensures optimum fuel efficiency. The 30-tonne workhorse combines the advantages of its predecessor model with up to 30 percent higher fuel efficiency.

With its independent control of the working hydraulics and drive train and the resulting fluid loading processes, the wheel loader is perfect for material handling.

The new SpaceCab of the 10 series wheel loader offers the operator an ergonomically designed workplace with sufficient space, first-class comfort and the best all-round visibility. Other features such as the automatic bucket filling system, joystick steering and the multi-view camera system (3 cameras to the front +1 camera to the rear) support the driver in fatigue-free and safe operation.

Kuhn as a reliable service partner

Anyone who buys a construction machine from Kuhn is dealing with a reliable partner with a strong network of service centres in nine European countries. Should repairs or maintenance be required, these can be carried out promptly.
