Compact enough to ride an elevator, powered by swappable batteries
Vilvoorde, April 2026 — Komatsu Europe International N.V. announces that the PC01E-2 and PC05E-1 electric micro excavators, currently available only in the Japanese market, are being trialed in Europe as part of a market and technical evaluation.
This initiative aims to assess technical challenges, regional market needs, and overall product suitability of electric micro excavators within the European context, in order to explore their potential applicability to the European market.
Both machines break new ground in Europe in two respects: no electric excavator of this size and weight class has previously been available here, and no machine in this class has ever offered swappable battery technology.
The PC01E-2 operates at a weight of 330kg with an overall width of 580mm; the PC05E-1 at 520kg with a width of 690mm. These dimensions make both machines compact enough to fit inside a standard freight elevator. This unlocks entirely new possibilities for work in buildings, basements, indoor renovation sites, confined urban spaces, and access-restricted locations.
Both machines are powered by the Honda Mobile Power Pack e: and Honda eGX electrified power unit as a power source. This portable, swappable battery technology allows for battery swapping under 10 minutes, eliminating charging downtime. The charger connects to any standard household outlet, requiring no dedicated infrastructure.
With no exhaust gases, no waste heat, and zero CO2 emissions at the jobsite, both machines create a better working environment for operators and those around them. Reduced noise levels make the PC01E-2 and PC05E-1 equally suited to sensitive urban environments, occupied buildings, and noise-restricted worksites.
The PC05E-1 adds further versatility through a standard hydraulic outlet for attachments, enabling the use of a wide range of hydraulic hand tools.
“The PC01E-2 and PC05E-1 have been successfully launched in Japan and received outstanding operator acclaim. We are pleased to now bring them to market evaluation in Europe, and we look forward to learning, together with our customers and distributors, what possibilities these machines can open up that were not available here in the European market before,” says Emanuele Viel, Group Manager Utility at Komatsu Europe.
Get in touch with your local Komatsu distributor if you wish to participate in the evaluation of these two machines.
At this stage, no decision has been made regarding the introduction of these models to the European market.
